Eagle Golfers Finish 5th in USA Fall Beach Classic
GULF SHORES, Ala. -- Southern Miss' men's golf team shot a final round 285 in South Alabama's Fall Beach Classic here Tuesday and finished solidly in fifth place in the 15-team field, with a 17-under-par 283-279-285--847 score. South Florida held on to its one-stroke, first-day lead to edge Jacksonville State by a stroke to win the 54-hole event.
The Bulls' 283-273-280--836 total was 28-under-par for the three rounds and good enough to win. Jacksonville State (290-274-273--837) used its final round to move from fifth to second. UCF (289-271-278--838), Memphis (281-276-282--839) and Southern Miss round out the top five teams
UCF's Barry Roof continued his steady play with a final round 4-under-par 68 to finish at 69-64-68--201, and 15-under-par and claim medalist honors. UNO's Kevin Maxwell (69-68-68--205) and USF's Brad Quiri (69-69-67--205) finished four shots off the pace. Danny Dennis carded Southern Miss' best finish with a 4-under-par 69-71-72--212 total.
Other Golden Eagle players and their scores include Shane Rushing (71-71-71--213) who tied for 22nd, Justin Elliott (72-65-76--213) who tied with Rushing for 22nd, Ben Snow (71-73-71--215) who tied for 34th and Matt Wofford (77-72-71--220) who tied for 53rd. Head Coach Steve Johnson's team did not count an above-par round in the tournament, and Elliott's second round, 7-under-par 65 was the second best round of the tournament.
Low scores were the rule for the tournament. Eleven of the 15 teams in the tournament finished under par, and 38 players finished at par or better. Another five matched par.
Southern Miss ended its fall season with today's round, and will not play again until the Tulane Invitational, Feb. 9-10, at the English Turn Golf Club in New Orleans, La.Sixth USA Fall Beach Classic
