Eagle Golfers Are 4th in USA Fall Beach Classic
GULF SHORES, Ala. -- Southern Miss' men's golf team shot a 14-under-par 36-hole total in first-day play at the USA Fall Beach Classic here Monday and sits alone in fourth place, with only Tuesday's 18-hole round remaining.
South Florida is the 36-hole leader at 20-under-par 283-273--556, and Memphis (281-276--557) is only a shot back in second place. Central Florida (289-271--560) occupies third place and Jacksonville State (290-274--564) rounds out the top five teams after day one. Host South Alabama finished in a tie for 12th place at 297-284--581. Fellow C-USA members Charlotte is in sixth place at 288-277--565, and Louisville ninth at 287-282--569. Central Florida's Barry Roof (69-64--133) is alone atop the leader board at 11-under-par, and four shots in front of a group of five players that includes Southern Miss' Justin Elliott, who finished at 7-under-par 72-65--137. Elliott's 65 was the second-best round of the day, a shot behind Roof's 64. A total of 31 players broke par for the first 36 holes and another seven matched par. The Eagles' Danny Dennis also finished at 4-under-par, 69-71--140, to claim 17th place, Shane Rushing finished at 2-under-par (71-71--142) and Ben Snow matched par, at 71-73--144. Matt Wofford finished the day at 77-71--149 for the Eagles. Southern Miss ends its fall season with tomorrow's final round of the South Alabama Fall Beach Classic, and then will not play again until the Tulane Invitational, Feb. 9-10, at the English Turn Golf Club in New Orleans, La.Sixth USA Fall Beach Classic Gulf Shores G.C. -- Gulf Shores, Ala. 36-Hole Results Par: 72 Yardage: 6,716 School 1
