Southern Miss Baseball Wraps Up Fall Season
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss baseball team wrapped up its fall season with the annual Black-Gold Fall Game, Sunday, at Pete Taylor Park.
It was a high-scoring affair as the Gold team pulled out a 10-9 win with two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to top the Black team. The game featured 23 hits, including seven doubles, one triple and four home runs.
"I thought it was pretty good," Southern Miss Head Coach Corky Palmer said. "Our young guys played really well, and that is what was pleasing to me. All of our players did well in the game, and we should have a lot of depth next season."
After the Black team opened with a pair of runs in the top of the first, the Gold squad answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame. The team traded three runs each over the next two innings and the score remained until the seventh inning. In the seventh and eighth, both squads tacked on one run in each inning to make the score 8-7 after eight frames.
The Black team eventually took the lead with two runs in the top of the ninth, but the Gold team came back with the two-run ninth to take the game, 10-9.
"It was an exciting game," Palmer said. "The players got after it a little bit. It was more like a game than a scrimmage, everyone was into it. We had a good fall, and now we go into the off-season and get ready for the spring."
Nathan Sanders had three RBIs with a home run and two hits to pace the Gold team to the win. Along with Sanders, three other Gold players -- Casey Summerlin, Carlos Velasquez and Jarrett Hoffpauir -- tallied two hits. Hoffpauir also had two RBIs and Summerlin chipped in with a solo home run.
For the Black team, Drew Carson led all players with three hits and one RBI -- a solo home run in the first inning. Adam Smith led all players with four RBIs, two hits and a three-run home-run. Marc Maddox, Jason Lowery and Chris Matesich also had two hits for the Black squad.
On the mound, John Nicholas picked up the win after throwing two innings and giving up three runs, one earned, on three hits. Starter Daniel Best allowed five runs on six hits in three innings of work, while Patrick Ezell and Josh Grant each threw a pair of innings and allowed one and two hits, respectively.
Cliff Russum drew the start for the Black team, giving up six runs on nine hits in three innings. Noah Tritz and Mike Cashion each threw two innings in relief, combining for one run on one hit. Ray Antonelli pitched one inning and gave up three runs, one earned, and took the loss. Smith also pitched in the game, allowing one hit in one-third of an inning.
