Lady Eagles Drop Non-Conference Contest at UNO, 49-43
NEW ORLEANS, La. - UNO used a 9-4 run in the last five minutes of the game, holding off Southern Miss for a 49-43 victory over the Lady Eagles, Monday night. Southern Miss falls to 7-6, while UNO improves to 4-7.
Dana Jones led Southern Miss with 13 points, while Sonja Brown pulled down eight rebounds. Jeannette Jimenez led UNO with 13 points and Monique Taylor added 11.
"We have talked about how difficult it is to win on the road," Southern Miss Assistant Coach Tiffany Gwynn said. "We have got to regroup and figure out how to win on the road. We have got to work through some things in order to be successful. We weren't able to capitalize on several opportunities which changed the game."
Both teams started the game ice-cold, missing the first 13 shots between the two teams over the first 3:24. The Lady Eagles got on the scoreboard first with a jumper by Lana Lewis. With the game tied, 7-7, Southern Miss scored seven unanswered points, taking a 14-7 lead at the 9:05 mark. UNO answered with a 7-0 run itself, tying the game 14-14 with 4:34 remaining before the half. Both team combined for 16 points in the last 4:20, settling for a 22-tie at the half.
Southern Miss held a three-point advantage at the 12:35 mark in the second, when UNO went on a 6-0 run to taking a 35-32 lead with 9:35 remaining. The Lady Eagles battled back to tie the game, 36-all, but UNO answered an 8-4 run for a 44-40 lead. UNO then connected on five-straight free throws to seal the win.
Both teams finished the game shooting less than 30 percent. Southern Miss outrebounded UNO, 47-41.
Southern Miss opens Conference USA play, Saturday, Jan. 11 at Tulane. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
