Emil Qualifies For U.S. Amateur Tourney
Hattiesburg, Miss. - Southern Miss golfer Justin Emil Monday qualified for the upcoming U.S. Amateur Tournament by winning a 36-hole qualifier at Cowboy's Golf Club in Grapevine, Texas, with a 12-under-par 132 total, that included a course record, 10-under-par 62 in his first round of the day.
Emil now will play in the U.S. Amateur Championship Aug. 19-25 at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. The first two days of the event are 18-hole medal play rounds that will cut the field to the top 64 players, who then will move on into match play to determine a champion. It will be his first trip to the U.S. Amateur.
Teammate Jake Pasch qualified for the tournament a year ago.
Emil, A Gulfport, Miss., native, will be a senior on Head Coach Steve Johnson's Golden Eagle golf team this season. His 62 was the best round of his career. "I've been hitting the ball well all summer," he said. "My putting hasn't been consistent, but it all came together for this event. It was awesome, the lowest round I've ever shot.
Johnson says Emil's hard work is starting to pay off. "Justin has worked really hard this summer, and I'm happy to see that hard work pay off for him," Johnson said. "He will represent our program, the University as a whole and himself well."
