Yelverton Will Compete in NCAA Tournament
Hattiesburg, Miss. - Outstanding University of Southern Mississippi senior golfer, Tim Yelverton, has been selected to play in the May 16-18, NCAA East Region Tournament, at the Ansley Golf Club's Settin' Down Creek Course in Roswell, Ga.
The 6-0, 175-pounder from Magee, Miss., and Simpson Academy, will compete as an individual and was one of only three individual competitors selected from Region 3-South, the Region in which the Golden Eagles compete.
Yelverton earned the honor after finishing fifth in the 2002 Conference USA Championship at The Club at Hidden Creek in Navarre, Fla., where he shot rounds of 74-71-67--212. Those numbers earned him All-Tournament honors as well as All-Conference accolades for a second-straight year.
He becomes only the second Golden Eagle selected to compete in the Regional Tournament in the last 15 years. He follows in the footsteps of his friend, V.J. Trolio, who played in the 1998 tournament.
Yelverton is working hard to get ready for the approaching tournament. "I'm really excited about being selected to play in the East Region," he said. "This is something I've worked hard for. In fact, it's something that everyone on this year's team was shooting for and my being selected is part of a group effort, in that we kept pushing each other. I'm looking forward to playing with some of the best players in the nation and, I hope, moving on to the nationals."
The top five individuals not already on teams that finish high enough to earn a trip to the national tournament, will move on to the national tournament.
Golden Eagle Head Coach Steve Johnson says Yelverton deserves the honor. "I'm excited for him," said Johnson. "He's worked really hard for the last two years, and I don't think there's anybody in the country who is more deserving of this honor."
