Yelverton Improves At NCAA Tourney
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss golfer Tim Yelverton cut 10 strokes off his opening day score in today's second round of the NCAA East Regional Tournament being played at Ansley Golf Club's Settindown Creek course in Roswell, Ga., with a two-over-par 74, and is in 105th place heading into Saturday's final round.
Clemson continues to lead the team competition after two rounds with a one-over-par 577, only one stroke ahead of Georgia Tech. Clemson's D. J. Trahan shot a two-under-par 70 to maintain a two-stroke lead. Following the second round, only eight players are shooting par or better. Virginia Commonwealth's Ryan Zylstra turned in the best round of the day, shooting a five-under-par 67.
"Tim played much better today," Golden Eagle Head Coach Steve Johnson said. "His score is still above his average, but he seemed more comfortable. Tim grew up on Bermuda grass and this course has bent grass. Bent grass is a little different in that it's much faster than the Bermuda."
Yelverton and his group will tee off at 9 a.m., Saturday.
