Tulane Blanks Southern Miss, 7-0
NEW ORLEANS - Tulane scored seven runs and rode the arm of Nick Bourgeois en route to a 7-0 blanking of Southern Miss, Thursday, at Turchin Stadium, marking the first time the Golden Eagles have been shutout this season.
Bourgeois (10-2) pitched eight innings, giving up six hits, walking five and striking out three. Will Walter finished the game, pitching the final inning, giving up one hit and striking out one. Shea Douglas (10-2) took his second loss of the season, pitching five innings, giving up four runs, three earned, on eight hits, walking three and striking out four. Charlie Rogers came on in relief in the sixth inning, giving up three runs, two earned, on four hits, walking four and striking out four. Anthony Dewitt finished the game, pitching the final inning, striking out one.
Tulane (31-23, 15-13 in C-USA) finished with seven runs on 12 hits, while Southern Miss (35-18, 18-9) finished with seven hits and committed three errors. Tulane left 13 runners on base, while Southern Miss stranded nine.
Turner Brumby led Tulane with a 4-for-5 performance at the plate with two RBIs, and James Jurries finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Bryan Stelmack finished with three RBIs and Aaron Feldman had two hits for the Green Wave.
Tulane took the early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Brumby hit a one-out single to center, moved to second on Jurries' walk. Both runners moved up a base on Gerald Clark?s ground out to short and then scored on Stelmack?s double down the left field line.
The Green Wave extended their lead to 4-0, scoring two more in the second inning. Tommy Manzella reached on a one-out error by Matt Shepherd, then moved to second on Aaron Feldman?s single to left center and scored on Brumby?s double down the left field line. Feldman moved to third on Brumby?s double and then scored on a Jurries single to right field.
Tulane scored a run in the sixth, pushing its lead to 5-0. Feldman led off the inning with a single up the middle, stole second, moved to third on Clark?s walk and then scored when Stelmack drew a bases loaded walk.
The Green Wave scored two in the seventh inning, extending their lead to 7-0. Shankle led off the inning with a walk, stole second and moved to third on an errant throw by Brad Willcutt on the steal attempt. With two outs in the inning, Brumby singled to left, driving in Shankle. He moved to third on an errant pickoff by pitcher Rogers and scored on Jurries' single to right field.
Both teams return to action in game two on Friday night at 6:30 p.m.
