Golden Eagle Baseball Hosts New Orleans on Wednesday
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The University of Southern Mississippi (22-11), ranked No. 28 by Collegiate Baseball, hosts University of New Orleans (18-14) in a non-conference game on Wednesday, April 10, at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field, starting at 6:30 p.m.
The game will be broadcast on 107 FM, The Zoo, in Hattiesburg and on www.SouthernMiss.com for fans outside the Hattiesburg area. Lance Pittman will handle the play-by-play duties with the pregame show beginning 15 minutes prior to the first pitch.
This will be the 78th meeting between the two schools. Under Corky Palmer, the Golden Eagles are 6-6 against the Privateers, dropping the last two in the series. Overall, New Orleans leads the series, 45-32.
The Golden Eagles are 22-11 after defeating Southeastern Louisiana on Tuesday, 6-4, and sweeping Charlotte on the road this past weekend, 9-3, 10-4 and 7-5 in 11 innings. New Orleans (18-14) has lost three of the last four games, dropping two-of-three against South Alabama and one to LSU last week.
Southern Miss is currently hitting .308 as a team, has 108 extra base hits (76 doubles, five triples and 24 homers) and has stolen 35 bases. The Golden Eagles are led by junior outfielder Jeff Cook, who is currently hitting a team-leading .359 batting average with three doubles, one triple, nine homers and 36 RBIs. Allen Winningham is hitting .349 with 13 doubles, one triple, five homers and 26 RBIs. Carlos Velasquez and Griff Israel, share the No. 3 spot, hitting .340. Velasquez leads the team in stolen bases with 13, along with nine doubles, one triple and three homers. Israel has eight doubles, one triple, two homers and 25 RBIs.
Senior Daniel Stewart (1-2, 5.31 ERA) takes the mound for Southern Miss. He has started seven games, giving up 30 runs, 24 earned on 56 hits, striking out 34 and walking nine. In his last start against Alabama last week, he received a no-decision, pitching 6.2 innings, giving up two runs on six hits, walking two and striking out four.
New Orleans is hitting .281, has 91 extra base hits (56 doubles, 15 triples, 21 homers) and has stolen 43 bases Top hitters for the Privateers are J.D. Huether, who is hitting .381 with 11 doubles, two triples, three homers and a team-leading 34 RBIs. Chris Adams is hitting .370 with three doubles, two triples and one homer with 10 RBIs. Gabe Trevizo is hitting .306 with seven doubles, three triples and six homers to round out the team's .300 hitters.
Freshman Thomas Diamond takes the mound for the Privateers with an 0-1 record with a 5.19 ERA in 17.1 innings pitched. He has given up 13 runs, 10 earned, on 25 hits, walking 10 and striking out 12. Opponents have hit .338 off of him.
After Wednesday's game with New Orleans, Southern Miss hosts Louisville in a Conference USA weekend series in Hattiesburg, Miss., at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field. Friday's game starts at 6:30 p.m., Saturday's game at 4 p.m., and Sunday's will take place at 1 p.m.
