Golden Eagle Baseball Downs Southeastern Louisiana, 6-4
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Griff Israel hit a base-clearing triple down the first base line in the third inning, and Jeff Cook hit a two-run single up the middle in the fourth inning to spark Southern Miss to a 6-4 victory over Southeastern Louisiana, tonight, at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
Brian Hurley (3-1) picked up his third win of the season, pitching 4.1 innings, giving up four runs, three earned, on nine hits and striking out a season-high seven batters. Brent Leach came on in relief in the fifth inning, pitching 2.2 innings, giving up two hits and striking out one, and Cliff Russum picked up his fourth save of the season, pitching the final two innings, giving up one hit, walking one and striking out one.
Down by two with one out in the ninth inning, Southeastern Louisiana's Matt Rogelstead walked and then advanced to third on Anthony Krajancic's double off the right field wall. Rhett Buras popped out to first and Joey Duhe grounded out to third to end the rally and the game.
Southern Miss (22-11) scored six runs on seven hits and committed one error, while Southeastern Louisiana (14-18) scored four runs on 12 hits and didn't have any errors. The Lions left 10 on base, while the Golden Eagles stranded five.
Israel finished with two hits and three RBIs and Beau Griffin also finished with two hits to lead Southern Miss. Cook finished with a hit and two RBIs and Jarrett Hoffpauir also had an RBI. Carlos Velasquez and Allen Winningham each were walked twice. Krajancic and Duhe led the Lions with three hits each, and Jesse Newell and Rogelstead each had two hits.
Paul Labiche (0-2) dropped the decision for the Lions, pitching the first two innings, giving up four runs on two hits, walking six and striking out one. Marlo Migliacio came on in relief in the third inning, pitching 1.1 innings, giving up two runs on three hits and walking two. Craig Gonzales pitched the final 4.2 innings, giving up two hits and striking out two.
Velasquez was walked to lead off the third inning, stole second and advanced to third when Cook and Winningham were both walked. Israel tripled down the right field line to clear the bases and then scored on Hoffpauir ground out to short.
Matt Shepherd walked to lead off the fourth, moved to second on Velasquez's single up the middle and then was forced out at third on Winningham's grounder to third. Both Winningham and Velasquez advanced two second and third on a passed ball and then scored on Cook's single up the middle.
The Golden Eagles host New Orleans at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m.
