UAB Edges Golden Eagles, 5-4, in Series Finale
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ? UAB scored five runs over the fourth and fifth innings and held on to win the Conference USA series finale, 5-4, over visiting Southern Miss, Sunday, at Young Memorial Field in Birmingham, Ala.
Down 3-0 after three-and-a-half innings, the Blazers scored two runs on two hits in the fourth inning to cut the deficit to one run. UAB took the lead for good one inning later, as Eric Lyon launched a three-run home run to score the go-ahead and winning runs.
Southern Miss (29-16, 13-7 in C-USA) scored four runs on eight hits and had one error, while UAB (14-29, 5-16) scored five runs on nine hits and committed one error.
The Golden Eagles took the 3-0 lead in the third inning, as Jeff Cook blasted his 13th home run of the season, a three-run shot over right center field. After UAB took the 5-3 lead, Southern Miss cut the deficit to one run on Allen Winningham's RBI-single that scored Jason Lowery in the sixth inning.
Charlie Rogers (5-2) took the loss for the Golden Eagles, allowing five runs on seven hits and had three strikeouts in five innings on the mound. Daniel Stewart, who made his first relief appearance of the season, threw three innings, giving up just two hits and striking out two batters.
Carlos Velasquez, Winningham and Matt Shepherd led Southern Miss with three hits apiece, while Cook led the way with three RBIs. Cook and Clint Stoy had the other two hits for the Golden Eagles.
John Burgett (1-2) picked up the win in relief for UAB, allowing one run on three hits and fanning five batters in 5.2 innings. Starter Jeff Brown lasted 3.1 innings and allowed three runs on five hits with two strikeouts.
Lyon led the Blazers with two hits and three RBIs, while Matt Womble, Kyle Leon and Mark Garner also contributed with two hits each.
Southern Miss returns to action on Tuesday, hosting Mississippi Valley State in the final non-conference game of the season. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
