TCU Tops Southern Miss In Tennis Action
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Top-seed TCU defeated ninth-seeded Southern Miss 4-1 Friday in the second round of the 2002 Conference USA Men?s Tennis Championship.
The Horned Frogs won the doubles point as the team of Jacob Martin and Alex Menichini topped Miikka Kangas and Nicolas Carteret 8-6 at No. 1 and Toni Gordon and Chris Brandi defeated Juanjo Martin and Uwe Gneiting 8-4 at No. 3.
"We gave a good effort today," Head Coach Teddy Viator said. "We have to bounce back and be ready to play tomorrow. We put ourselves in a position to win, but we didn't close out a couple of matches."
In singles action, TCU?s Daniel Wajnberg defeated Martin 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 and Menichini beat David Canudas 6-2, 7-6 at No. 4. Southern Miss got a singles win from David Jansson with his 6-4, 6-2 win over Gordon at No. 1. TCU?s Fabrizio Sestini clinched the match, edging Kangas 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (9-7) at No. 2.
TCU will play third-seeded South Florida in the semifinals Saturday at 9:00 a.m. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. Southern Miss will take on No. 6 UAB Saturday at noon at Seneca Park.
