Southern Miss Will Play UNO On Wednesday
After playing at Ole Miss tonight, the Golden Eagles will head to New Orleans, La. on Wednesday before coming home to host Cincinnati in their second conference weekend series of the season.
This will be the 77th meeting between the two schools. The game originally was scheduled for Feb. 26th, but was rescheduled due to inclement weather. Under Corky Palmer, the Golden Eagles are 6-5 against the Privateers. Overall, New Orleans leads the series, 44-32. New Orleans will play city rival Tulane tonight before tomorrow's game. The Privateers are coming off a three game series with Howard University this past weekend, in New Orleans. The Privateers won all three games, 11-0, 19-2, and 14-4.
The Privateers won the last game with Southern Miss, 5-2, in the 2001 season, in Hattiesburg. New Orleans scored five runs on nine hits and committed two errors. Southern Miss scored two runs on 11 hits and committed one error. Stephen Castleman was the starting pitcher for the Golden Eagles pitching four innings, giving up one run on five hits, walking two and striking out five. Jarrad Robinson came on in relief in the fifth inning, pitching 3.1 innings, giving up four runs on four hits, walking four and striking out four. Anthony Rawson finished the game for the Golden Eagles, going the final 1.2 innings and striking out three.
Rory Shanks was the starting pitcher for New Orleans, pitching seven innings, giving up two runs on eight hits, walking two and striking out four. Desmond Baxter came on in relief in the eighth, pitching an inning, giving up two hits, before Jeff Stander picked up his second save of the season. Stander pitched the final inning, gave up one hit and struck out three batters. New Orleans' J.D. Huether led the hitting going 3-for-5 with two doubles and drove in two runs, while Donnie Ballich went 3-for-4 at the plate and scored two runs. Jeff Cook was the top hitter for Southern Miss, hitting 4-for-4.
Southern Miss currently is hitting .311 with 40 doubles, three triples and 16 homers. The team is led by junior outfielder Jeff Cook, who is hitting .416, with one double, a triple, six home runs. He has driven in a team-leading 21 runs. His on-base percentage is .505 and his slugging percentage is .688. Sophomore outfielder Carlos Velasquez is second on the team, hitting .375, with six doubles, one triple and three home runs. Senior third baseman Allen Winningham is hitting .378 with eight doubles, one triple, four home runs and has driven in 16 runs.
The Privateers are hitting .282 with 34 doubles, nine triples and 15 home runs. They are led by senior third baseman Huether, who is hitting .394 with eight doubles, a triple, three home runs and has driven in a team-leading 23 runs. His on-base percentage is .438 and his slugging percentage is .662. Freshman infielder Chris Adams is second on the team, hitting .325, with two triples, one home run and seven runs batted in.
The Golden Eagles will send Anthony Dewitt to the mound on Wednesday. He is 0-0 and has made four appearances this season. He has an ERA of 3.86 in seven innings pitched. He has given up five runs, three earned, on six hits, striking out three and walking two. The Privateers will give the start to freshman lefthander, Josh Euper. Euper has a record of 0-0 and has made two appearances. He has an ERA of 0.00, one strikeout, and four walks, on two innings pitched.
Southern Miss will host Cincinnati for a three-game weekend series at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field on Mar. 22-24. Friday's game will start at 6:30 p.m., Saturday's at 2 p.m., and Sunday's at 1 p.m.
