Southern Miss Downs San Francisco, 53-44
Dana Jones came off the bench to lead Southern Miss with 11 points and Lana Lewis added 10 points. Sonja Brown pulled down 10 rebounds. Carey Sauer of San Francisco led all scorers with a game-high 17 points and Toni Russell chipped in 12.
"This was a good win for us tonight," Head Coach Rick Reeves said. "We got a little careless in the beginning with a couple of turnovers. We were a little nervous, but then we settled down and started to play and some positive things began to happen."
USF opened the game with an 11-2 lead, 2 minutes and 15 seconds into the game. The Lady Eagles then went on a 10-0 on, taking a 12-11 lead atthe 13:15 mark. USF regrouped and put together a 10-3 run of its own over the next three minutes for a six point advantage, 21-15, with 10:28 before the half. Over the next seven minutes, Southern Miss outscored USF 9-2, taking its first lead of the game, 24-23. Southern Miss led 29-27 at the half.
The Lady Eagles opened the second half, scoring seven straight points to take a 36-27 lead. The Lady Dons closed the gap to two, 40-38, with 8:38 remaining, but Southern Miss built its lead to back seven, 47-40, with 5:31 remaining. The Lady Eagles closed out the game with a 6-2 run.
Southern Miss held the rebounding edge, 33-21.
Southern Miss plays at McNeese State, Friday, Dec. 20, either at 3:30 or a 5 p.m. start.
