Southern Miss Signs Columbus High School Standout
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss women's basketball Head Coach Rick Reeves and his staff announced the signing of Columbus High School standout Michelle Poindexter to a National Letter of Intent and Grant-in-Aid agreement today, during the early signing period.
Poindexter, a 6-1, forward plays at Columbus High School in Columbus, Miss. She averaged 12.5 points and 9.5 rebuonds as a junior. Her team finished 30-6 last season, advancing to the championship game and finishing as the state runner-up. She is listed as "One of the Seniors to Watch" by the Clarion Ledger. She was named all-district, all-north half and all-state. Through two games this season, Poindexter is averaging 10.0 points and 10.0 rebounds. She helped her team defeated the No. 2 ranked team in the state in her first game of the season.
"Michelle is that combo post player like Jessica Woods or Sonja Brown, who can play the four or the five," Reeves said. "She has good range on her shot as a perimeter player. Michelle is going to be a good player. She gives us another quick, up and down post player."
Columbus High School Coach Amanda Brabham said, "Michelle is the best post player I've ever coached."
"I feel like we have a good recruiting class," Reeves continued. "Michelle came to our basketball camp and she was one of our first choices. We are excited about her being a part of our Golden Eagle family."
