Southern Miss Drops Exhibition Game to Premier Players, 76-51
"I thought the players played hard, but we just made a lot of mental mistakes that you're going to commit in exhibition games," Head Coach Rick Reeves said. "The only negative is that I though we played without a lot of confidence."
Senior forward Dana Jones led the Lady Eagles with 14 points, while Lana Lewis pulled down a team-high six rebounds. Defensively, Southern Miss out-rebounded Premier Players, 44-37. The Premier Players took advantage of 24 Southern Miss turnovers, scoring 27 points off those turnovers.
Octavia Blue paced three Premier Players in double-figures with 17 points, followed by Tynesha Lewis with 14 and Marche' Strickland added 12. The Premier Players hit seven three-point baskets.
"It was great getting Jessica Woods back on the floor," Reeves said. "She is not 100 percent, but she is such a catalyst. She is a wonderful leader."
Premier Players finished the game shooting 50 percent from the field, while holding Southern Miss to 26.6 percent. However, the Lady Eagles hit 81 percent from the free line.
I'm really pleased with this basketball team," Reeves said. "This is the best exhibition team we've ever played. We will go back and look at this tape and find out the things we need to work on. We need to polish up the little things to get ready for Hampton."
The Lady Eagles open the regular season Nov. 22, at Hampton.
