Baseball Announces 2003 Schedule
"We're excited about our schedule for the 2003 season," fifth-year Southern Miss Head Baseball Coach Corky Palmer said. "We always try to play the best competition that will not only challenge our club but also prepare us for Conference USA competition. The conference proved to be one of the best in the nation, sending five teams to the regionals last year.
"This year's schedule has seven opponents that were selected to participate in the NCAA Sub-Regional Tournament and two advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals. The Conference schedule will be tough once again. We will travel to Louisville, Cincinnati, Memphis, East Carolina and Houston and have home series with Saint Louis, Tulane, Charlotte, UAB and South Florida. I also believe the Coca-Cola Classic, where we will face Northwestern from the Big Ten Conference, St. John's from the Big East Conference and South Alabama, will be a challenging event for our team before we open conference play.
Highlighting the Southern Miss 2003 baseball schedule will be contests with 2002 NCAA participants East Carolina, Houston, Louisville, Southeast Missouri State, South Alabama, South Florida and Tulane. Houston is the only team on the Golden Eagles' schedule that advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals.
The Golden Eagles open the 2003 season with a three-game home series with McNeese State, and travel to New Orleans for a single game, before playing in the Coca-Cola Classic Feb. 21-23 and at Ole Miss on Feb. 25. Southern Miss hosts Louisiana Tech for a three-game series on Feb. 28 - March 2 before traveling to Louisiana-Monroe for a two-game series on Mar. 4-5. The Golden Eagles host Southeast Missouri State for a three-game home series on Mar. 7-9 and Temple for a two-game home series on Mar. 11-12, and then open Conference USA play with Saint Louis at home, Mar. 14-16.
Once conference action starts, non-conference contests with South Alabama, Mississippi Valley State (played in Jackson), home and home games with Southeastern Louisiana, two games at in-state rival Mississippi State and a home contest with Ole Miss will be sprinkled around the conference schedule.
