2001 Southern Miss Football Season Finally Here
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - All 23 first-year players, along with selected walkons, expected to report for the start of fall workouts at The University of Southern Mississippi arrived as schedule Friday as football 2001 opens for Head Coach Jeff Bower and his Golden Eagles.
With the opening game of the 2001 season now less than a month away, Southern Miss coaches and fans can start making preparations in earnest for a season that Eagle fans hope will be even better than last year's season that resulted in an 8-4 record and a bowl victory over now fellow C-USA member TCU.
Twins Kevis and Trevis Coley also reported and will be on scholarship and eligible to practice with the team after meeting core high school academic requirements. Neither met the minimum ACT score and will not play this fall.
The first-year players will spend much of Saturday and Sunday in a variety of academic orientations, meetings, church services and speed and conditioning tests before getting on the practice field for the first time Monday. Varsity players report Tuesday and full squad workouts start Aug. 9. In addition to the signees and invited walkons, four players who have been on campus and who went through spring workouts will join the group that reports Tuesday. They are defensive backs Carmus Haynes and Carsha Stromas, receiver Rocky Harrison and offensive lineman Bradley Worthington. Defensive back Leroy Johnson, a mid-semester transfer from Gulf Coast Community College who also participated in spring workouts.
First-year players also will attend the Sixth Annual Eagle FanFare, sponsored by the Hattiesburg Metro Chapter of the Southern Miss Alumni Association, at 6:30 p.m., Saturday night at the University Commons; and, the annual Media Day/Meet the Eagles Day is set for 2 p.m., Aug. 12 in Roberts Stadium. The coaching staff and players will meet with the media while on the field and also will be available for autographs and photos with Golden Eagle fans.
