Reeves Receives Contract Extension
Hattiesburg, Miss. - The University of Southern Mississippi Director of Athletics Richard Giannini has announced today that the University has recommended to the IHL Board that women's basketball coach Rick Reeves' contract be extended for an additional year.
The extension is subject to formal approval by the Board of Trustees of the Institutions of Higher Learning, and the contract represents the maximum length allowed by the Board.
Reeves' contract now will run through the 2004 season, while all other terms and conditions of the contract remain the same, according to Giannini.
Reeves is thrilled about the recommendation by the University. "I am grateful and appreciative to the University and Richard Giannini for the contract extension. My family and I are very happy here in Hattiesburg and at The University of Southern Mississippi. I have a good working relationship with the other coaches at Southern Miss, and I have never worked for a better athletic director than Richard Giannini."
In his first year, Reeves guided the Lady Eagles to its first postseason play since 1996 with a berth in the NWIT and finished 17-12. With a youthful team last season, he finished 12-16, but returns nine letterwinners, along with a cast of newcomers that includes three players 6-3 or taller.
"We recommended to extend the contract months prior to Rick's discussions with Western Kentucky this past summer," Giannini said. "We're just pleased that he continues to be committed to the Lady Eagle basketball program. Rick has had outstanding success, and we look for great things to happen with our women's basketball program in the next few years. In addition to him being an outstanding coach and person, he continues to play a leadership role nationally by serving as one of the officers in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association."
