Baseball Adds Two More Signees
Hattiesburg, Miss. - Southern Miss Baseball Coach Corky Palmer has announced the signing of Kevin Coker and Jason Lowery to national letters of intent for the 2001-2002 academic year. These two signings are the first two in the spring signing period, bringing the total number of Southern Miss baseball signings to 10.
Kevin Coker is a four-year letterwinner as a catcher and outfielder at Warren Central High School in Vicksburg, Miss. As a senior this past season, he hit .392 with 10 doubles, 10 stolen bases, 35 runs scored and drove in 30 runs in leading Warren Central to the state baseball championship. He was selected to play in the Mississippi State High School Association All-Star Game.
Coker also was a three-year letterwinner in basketball. He was named the team's most outstanding defensive player and ultimate team player award winner. He was a member of the National Honor Society, the Key Club and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
"Kevin can play a variety of positions, catcher, first base or in the outfield," Palmer said. "He is a good athlete with tremendous intensity and comes from one of the best high school programs in the state."
Lowery was a four-year letterwinner at first base and in the outfield at Petal High School in nearby Petal, Miss. This past year as a senior, he hit .474 and was named to the all-district team and the team's most valuable player. He was selected to play in the 27th Annual Mississippi State High School All-Star Game and the Mississippi State Games. He was named Petal High School's Outstanding Male Athlete and to the Who's Who Among American High School Students and Who's Who in Sports.
He also was a four-year letterwinner in soccer. He was the team's best offensive player and was named first-team all-district, first-team all-state and the Division 7-4A Player of the Year.
"Jason is an outstanding defensive outfielder, who is very athletic," Palmer said. "He can run and throw and continues to get stronger. If he continues to work hard and improve, he could have a good career at Southern Miss."
