Lady Eagles Hold Awards Banquet
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss women's basketball squad held its annual postseason awards banquet Tuesday at the Comfort Inn Convention Center, and newcomers Victoria Mason and Lana Lewis claimed the top two awards.
Mason took home the Most Outstanding Player honor. She led the team in scoring (11.6) and rebounding (5.6).
Lewis earned the team's Coaches' Award, which is given to the player who excels on and off the court. She was the top scoring freshman on the team at 4.8 points per game. She averaged 21.2 minutes per game.
Other Lady Eagle award winners include Janique Williams, who was named the team's Defensive Player of the Year. Krystal Reeves received the Academic Player award for the team highest GPA. Krystal Courtney received the Most Improved Player award.
Junior Jessica Woods received statistical awards for best field goal percentage and rebounding, while Courtney received the best three-point shooting award. Lewis led the team in free throw percentage and received the free throw award. Freshman Kristy Gaines received the blocked shots award. Senior Angela Johnson received the assists and steals awards.
The Lady Eagles return 10 letterwinners for the 2001-02 season.
The men’s 4X400 meter relay team finished fourth with a time 3:19.82 along
