Women's Basketball Team Inks Junior College Standout
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss Women's Basketball Coach Rick Reeves announced the signing of junior college
standout, La'Tasha Sumerall, to a National Letter of Intent for the 2001-2002 academic year, Wednesday.
Sumerall, a 5-8, guard, played for Coach Larry Pherrell at Holmes Community College in Goodman, Miss. She averaged
17.7 points, 6.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.9 steals per game this past year. She was an all-Region 23 and all-state selection
for two years. She led her team in scoring and steals. She also played in the Mississippi Junior College Coaches Association
All-Star game. She ranked in the top five in Region 23 in scoring.
"I'm real excited about having La'Tasha join the program," Reeves said. "She gives us a deminison that we didn't have this
past season, a scoring wing player who can score off the dribble mid-range, she can take it to the basket, she can shoot the
three-point shot. She is a total package and definitely a scorer."
Sumerall played at Durant High School, where she was a three-year letterwinner for Coach Glendolyn Crowell. As a senior at
Durant High School, she helped lead her team to the Class 1-A state championship. She was an all-state and all-north state
selection.
"Tasha has a lot of athletic ability," Pherrell said. "She is quick, can run the floor well, and can handle the basketball. Her
only weakness is her strength. Once she gets into the weight room and gets stronger, she will become a solid player for
Southern Miss."
Reeves signed two players during the early signing period in November.
