Conference USA Names All-League Football Selections
Hattiesburg, Miss. - The Southern Miss football team placed six players on Conference USA's first and second team all-conference squads and five on the All-Freshman team as voted on by the conference's head coaches and a panel of media members, representing each school.
Greg Brooks, Rod Davis and Chad Williams were named to the first-team defense, and Terrell Paul and Roy Magee were named to the second-team defense. Jeremy Bridges was the lone offensive player selected, being named to the second team.
After being named to the Conference USA All-Freshman team last season, Brooks leads the Golden Eagles in pass breakups with 16, setting the school record held by Patrick Surtain. He also tallied 26 tackles, 19 unassisted, one quarterback sack, one tackle for loss and tied for the team lead with three interceptions.
Also named to the Conference USA All-Freshman team last season, Davis leads Southern Miss in tackles with 87 (8.7 tackles per game average), 59 unassisted, eight tackles for loss, three quarterback sacks, two interceptions, three pass breakups, one forced fumble and three fumble recoveries.
Williams was named to the All-Conference USA second team last season. After moving from the free safety position to the rover position this season, he is fourth on the team in tackles with 59, 43 unassisted. He also has two quarterback sacks, four tackles for loss, one interception, seven pass breakups, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. His two forced fumbles give him seven in his career, making him the career leader in Southern Miss history.
Paul was named to the All-Freshman team last season and this year leads the Golden Eagles in quarterback sacks with six. He also has 46 tackles, 24 unassisted, 10 tackles for loss, six pass breakups, one blocked kick, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries.
This is Magee's first-time on the all-conference team. He leads the Golden Eagles in tackles for loss with 11 and is second in quarterback sacks with 3.5. He is the fifth-leading tackler on the team with 58 tackles, 35 unassisted and two pass breakups.
Bridges, an all-freshman team selection in 1999, makes his first appearance on an all-conference team. A three-year starter, he has only given up three and one half sacks in 298 plays this year. He also helped lead the way for the offense to average 342.8 yards per game.
James Walley, Jeremy Parquet, Myron Powe and Chris Johnson were named to the Offensive All-Freshman team and Skylor Magee was named to the Defensive All-Freshman team.
Walley played in five games this season and has helped carry the offensive load down the stretch. He has 72 carries for 236 yards, an average of 3.3 yards a run and has scored three touchdowns. Parquet and Powe have seen times as backups on the offensive line. Magee was forced to start on the defensive line because of preseason injuries. He started all 10 games and has 31 tackles, three tackles for loss, a half of a quarterback sack and a pass breakup.
