Southern Miss Continues TCU Preps
Hattiesburg, Miss. - Southern Miss has one day of preparation left for Friday's final regular season game of the 2001 season, at home against Conference USA foe TCU, and Head Coach Jeff Bower is less than happy with his team's practice habits thus far.
"I was disappointed with our practice today, especially offensively," Bower said. "We didn't have a very good day, we didn't come out and concentrate very well and that's not the kind of practice you need before a game like this. I hope we'll respond and have a better day Wednesday.
"I'm not sure I can explain why we didn't practice well, but we didn't practice as well today as we needed to."
Bower also says he doesn't expect much new from TCU. "They're not going to change much for us," he said. "We might see a wrinkle or two, but you don't expect to see a team change much at this point in the season. Looking at the tape, this is team that has played hard, physical football, and especially so in the Louisville game. I'm sure our game Saturday will be the same. Our fans will remember that we had a hard-fought game with them in the bowl game last year, and if we're not really ready to play, and play the way we're capable of playing, it will be a long night."
Bower also says senior running back Dawayne Woods, who missed the Alabama game with a shoulder injury suffered in the East Carolina game, did "most everything" in the Tuesday workout, looked all right, and should be ready to go for the Friday game.
The game starts at 6 p.m., in Roberts Stadium as 13 seniors play their final regular season game as well as make their final home appearance. Much of the pregame publicity lists the game time as 7 p.m., but the correct start time is 6 p.m. The game will be carried nationally on ESPN2.
