Lady Eagles Post Second Win of the Season
LaTasha Sumerall led all scorers with 16 points, Lana Lewis scored 13 and Sonja Brown recorded her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Ashley Porterfield led Gardner Webb with 12 pointsand Katie Gravel pulled down 11 rebounds.
"I am real pleased with the victory," Head Coach Rick Reeves said. "I think our players are maturing and getting better every game. Gardner Webb is a very-well coached team. I thought we did a nice job on their international player (Maggie Tomporek) from Poland. I thought we did a good job of containing her. Their guard Garvel was averaging 19 points and I thought we did a good job on her also."
Gardner Webb scored the first four points to start the second half, closing the gap to five, 34-29. Southern Miss then went on a 10-0 run to take a 15-point lead, 44-29, with just over 13 minutes remaining in the game. GWU cut the lead to nine, 45-36, following a 7-1 run, and that was as close as the Bulldogs would get.
Southern Miss took a 34-25 lead into intermission. The Lady Eagles held a 29-18 advantage for their biggest lead in the opening half. Gardner Webb led only once in the first period, 10-9, at the 14:42 mark.
Sumerall scored 10 points in the first half, while Sonja Brown pulled down 10 rebounds. Porterfield led GWU with 10. Gardner Webb led with a 23-22 rebound advantage.
Southern Miss finished the game with a 38.7 shooting percentage (24-62) and a 35.7 free throw percentage (5-14). GWU shot 32.8 percent from the field (19-58) and 25.0 from the line (1-4).
Gardner Webb will play the loser of the Alcorn State-Appalachian State game in the consolation game 2 p.m., Sunday, with Southern Miss facing the winner at 4 p.m. An all-tournament team will be named following the tournament.
