Southern Miss Football Bowl Applications
Now Available
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Director of Athletics Richard Giannini has announced that applications for a possible 2001 football bowl game are now available. It is anticipated that applications will be in the mail by the end of the current week to all current Eagle Club members, football season ticket holders, and select groups of alumni.
After beating East Carolina 28-21 last Saturday, Southern Miss now is bowl eligible at 6-3 with games remaining at Alabama (Nov. 29) and at home versus TCU (Dec. 7). As Southern Miss is still under consideration by a number of bowls, it is anticipated that a win in one or more of the remaining games will send the Golden Eagles to postseason play for a fifth-consecutive season.
The application lists a number of bowls most likely to select Southern Miss, including the GMAC Bowl at Mobile, Ala., (Dec. 19), the galleryfurniture.com Bowl at Houston, Texas (Dec. 28) and the Motor City Bowl at Detroit, Michigan (Dec. 29). Tickets for a pregame buffet, sponsored by the USM Alumni Association, are also included on the order form.
Additional details will be made available once a bid has been officially extended and accepted. The priority order deadline for a 2001 football bowl game is Monday, Dec. 10.
"We're pleased to be bowl elgibible for a fifth-straight year, and we're excited about the potential of playing in another bowl game," Giannini said. "Due to the lack of time between our final regular season game (Dec. 7, against TCU), and the bowl game, whichever one it is, we have prepared a bowl ticket application that covers the three bowl possibilities to which we might be invited.
"We appreciate the tremendous support our fans have given us all year and know they will follow us to whichever bowl opportunity we receive. We also would again encourage fans to purchase tickets from our Athletic Ticket Office. That is the only way we will receive credit for selling the ticket and thus realize the full financial benefit of playing in the bowl."
