Southern Miss M-Club Hall of Fame

Earl Marshall
- Induction:
- 1991
When we sit down to measure the contributions of prospective Hall of Fame members at the University of Southern Mississippi there are many attributes that we judge to determine whether or not an individual is deserving of induction. One of course is that individual’s achievements and contributions on the athletic fields. Another is that individual’s accomplishments after leaving USM and last, but certainly not least, is that person’s support and loyalty towards the University and their efforts to help the school achieve and reach its goals.Â
There is no doubt that Earl Marshall meets all of these requirements.    Following his outstanding career at East Central he elected to stay close to home and signed a scholarship with the University of Southern Mississippi. Earl was a member of the 1956 team which posted an 7-2-1 record and played in the Tangerine Bowl and the 1957 team which finished 8-3 and again played in the Tangerine Bowl.Â
As a two-way end at Southern Mississippi and a special teams player Earl made valuable contributions to the success of these teams. He was a part of a group of outstanding ends on those teams and shared playing time with such greats as Bob Yencho, Curry Juneau and Hugh McInnis just to mention a few. In fact Earl became the 15th member of those 1956 and 1957 teams to be inducted into the USM Sports Hall of Fame.
Since leaving USM Earl has coached at Crystal Springs High School, Tylertown High School and Baker Junior High School, served as assistant director of the Governor’s Highway Safety program and for the past 17 years has worked for Lincoln National Life Insurance Company.
In 1968 while working for the Governor’s Highway Safety program as assistant director under Governor John Bell Williams, Earl among other things designed the Driver’s Education Project for USM’s Driver’s Ed Program which paved the driver’s ed parking lot for a driver training range and purchased multi-media equipment at a cost of $150,000.
Over the past few years the list of service and dedication to USM goes on an on. As President of the USM Alumni Association in 1979 he initiated the project to acquire the live Eagle mascot and assisted in the planning and the fund raising of an aviary to house it. He was a charter member of the USM Alumni Hall of Fame in 1987
He was a charter member of USM’s athletic fund raising group and has been a member ever since.Â
