Doug Satcher
- Induction:
- 1983
Doug Satcher will be best remembered as one of the school’s all-time great linebackers. Few people in the history of Southern Miss football could dominate the way Satcher could.
Not only did Satcher possess the physical tools to get the job done, but also possessed the intelligence to go along with it.
Satcher wasn’t a player that could necessarily overwhelm with his size (just 5-11, 215-pounds), but he knew how to use all the abilities that he had to their fullest advantage.
From his linebacker position Satcher became one of the the true leaders of the Southern Miss defense throughout his career. He was a part of some of the greatest defenses that the Golden Eagles ever had. They were defenses that didn’t want to give an inch, defenses that went into a game believing they could kept the other team off the board. They were defenses that could just take over a game.
He came to Southern Miss from Sandersville, Mississippi and when he made his debut in 1963 it was nearly impossible to get him off the field for the remainder of his career.
In 1963 he saw action as a reserve as a guard on offense and at linebacker on defense and played a big role on the special teams. That 1963 team would finish the year with a 5-3-1 record, but defensively they would have a stretch of four straight shutouts and a streak of five shutouts over their final seven games that year. That defense in fact led the nation in total defense by holding opponents to just 131.2 yards a game and were also No. 4 in the country in scoring defense allowing 7.1 points per game.
In 1964 Satcher continued to be an outstanding linebacking guard for the team, which would post a 6-3 record. Satcher was again one of the leaders of the team, opening holes on offense and and playing his special all out brand of football that drove opponents crazy.
Satcher again led the Southern defense in 1965 as again the team was No. 1 in the country in total defense, allowing just 161.8 yards a game and they were second in the nation in scoring defense with just 14.1 points per game given up. That 1965 team posted a 7-2 record and recorded four shutouts, meaning Satcher was involved in 11 shutouts in his 27 game career at Southern Miss.
He was drafted in the 9th round of the 1966 AFL draft by the Boston Patriots and played a couple of seasons with that team.
As a catcher for the Southern Miss baseball team he hit .329 with two home runs and 11 runs batted in in 1964 and .348 with three home runs and 17 runs batted in in 1965.
Satcher was a player that was determined to succeed at everything that he did and worked hard to put himself in position to do exactly that
