Cliff Lewis (Football, 1978-80)
Became one of the school's best linebackers during a three-year career that started in 1978 after he transferred to Southern Miss from Georgia Tech...Was one of the architects and leaders of the original "Nasty Bunch" defense...In his first season with the Golden Eagles, he had 90 tackles that included 58 solo stops...The coaching staff credited him with six big plays that season that included two interceptions in addition to several tackles for losses...In 1979, he helped lead the Golden Eagles to wins over in-state rivals Ole Miss and Mississippi State and finished the season with 76 tackles, that included 44 solo stops and was credited with three big plays by the coaching staff...As a senior, he was a part of leading the team to its first bowl appearance as a Division I school and their first national ranking, finishing the season with an 8-3 record...He finished second on the team that year with 114 tackles, that included 74 solo tackles and had six big plays that included a fumble recovery and a quarterback sack....For his career he finished with 280 tackles...That 1980 team beat McNeese state 16-14 in the Independence Bowl...Played four seasons (1981-1984) in the NFL with the Green Bay Packers.
