Matthew Elzey enters his third season as an assistant coach on the Southern Miss Softball staff during the 2025–26 school year.
During his tenure in Hattiesburg, Elzey has played a key role in the continued rise of the Golden Eagles program. Most recently, he helped guide Southern Miss to another strong campaign in 2025, building on the program’s momentum with a return to the conference tournament and continued success in Sun Belt play. The Golden Eagles also notched key wins throughout the season, including victories over nationally ranked opponents, while continuing to show growth offensively and defensively.
In his first season with Southern Miss, Elzey helped lead the program to back-to-back conference tournament appearances for the first time since 2012–13. The Golden Eagles also earned a signature home victory over No. 24 Texas State.
Prior to joining the Golden Eagles in 2024, Elzey served as the head coach at Chesapeake College in Wye Mills, Maryland from 2020–23. He was named the 2023 Maryland JUCO Coach of the Year after leading his team to a conference championship while finishing with the nation’s top team batting average and a top-10 fielding percentage.
Elzey also served as an assistant coach for Jersey Intensity Fastpitch during the 2022–23 season and as head coach of the Gold Coast Hurricanes 18U travel team, where more than 80 players advanced to the collegiate level under his leadership.
Before Chesapeake, Elzey was an assistant coach at St. Michaels Middle School in Maryland, working primarily with pitchers while assisting with hitting and defense. He also spent four seasons at Easton High School as a hitting and pitching coach, helping lead the team to four playoff appearances and a trip to the state championship.
From 2011 to 2018, Elzey served as president of the Delaware Storm travel organization, overseeing its growth from two to 10 teams and the development of an indoor training facility.
Prior to his coaching career, Elzey owned a custom motorcycle business, gaining national recognition through various publications and television features. He is also a retired sergeant of the Maryland State Police, serving as a state trooper from 1988–2005.
