Christian Castro
- Title:
- Assistant Coach
2018-19 marks Castro’s second season with the Southern Miss softball program. Castro was born and raised in Puerto Rico and has been involved in sports since his early childhood, specifically baseball. As a teenager, he attended the Puerto Rico Baseball Academy and High School (Gurabo, Puerto Rico) and had the opportunity to be taught by former professional baseball players. Castro competed in a semi-pro league in Puerto Rico alongside players who moved on to play professionally in Major League Baseball and other professional leagues worldwide, and many others who transitioned into the coaching profession like himself.
In 2013, as he finished his playing career, Castro began his journey as a softball coach with his brother Carlos Castro at Jones County Junior College (Ellisville, Miss). The Castro brothers both assisted with the offensive game and Christian specialized in catching. The two brothers helped lead JCJC to three MACJC State Titles and two NJCAA National Runner-Up finishes. Under the Castro brothers hitting instruction, JCJC saw three players selected for NJCAA DII Player of the Year honors and numerous others were recognized as NJCAA All-Americans.
In 2017, Christian began working on the staff of head coach Wendy Hogue at the University of Southern Mississippi as a volunteer assistant coach. At Southern Miss, Christian continues to work daily with hitters and catchers, in addition to assisting in defensive aspects of the game. In Christian's inaugural season at Southern Miss, several players received All-Conference honors, including two C-USA Second Team honorees and a first team selection for the C-USA All-Freshman team.
