Jack MacDonald was elevated to the Assistant Athletic Director of Athletic Communications in February of 2024. He joined the athletics department in August of 2021 as Director of Athletic Communications for men's basketball and women's golf, while serving as the secondary contact for football.
MacDonald was named a College Sports Communicators 30 Under 30 honoree in December of 2024. The honor recognizes emerging athletics communications professionals at all levels of college sports in strategic, creative and digital spaces.
He handles the department's social media strategy and has helped grow the Southern Miss following tremendously. MacDonald has spearheaded a 207% growth in the men's basketball social media following on Instagram and X since August of 2021, while increasing the Instagram following by 332%. Across social media accounts for main athletics, football and men's basketball, he has helped increase the following by 72% on Instagram and X. Southern Miss' football Instagram account has seen a 97% increase in followers since August of 2021. MacDonald also guided the content strategy for Southern Miss' transition from Conference USA to the Sun belt in 2022.
MacDonald has also played a vital role in the day-to-day operations of SouthernMiss.com. He acted as the lead point-of-contact for the department's redesign efforts to SIDEARM's NextGen website platform. He also helped launch SouthernMade.TV, the only in-house content home of its kind in collegiate athletics at the time. He has also served as the media coordinator for two NCAA Baseball Regionals and one NCAA Super Regional.
MacDonald came to Hattiesburg after a year at the American Volleyball Coaches Association serving as the Social Media & E-Commerce Specialist. MacDonald served as the liaison between the AVCA and NCAA Division II volleyball coaches spearheading monthly meetings. He also distributed all of the AVCA National Coaches Polls and National Player of the Week awards.
Prior to his time in the bluegrass state, MacDonald served a two-year stint at Southern Miss as a graduate assistant from August of 2018 to May of 2020. He served as the primary contact for volleyball, beach volleyball and women's tennis.
A native of West Dundee, Illinois, MacDonald earned his bachelor's degree in journalism and mass communication from Iowa State University in 2018. MacDonald received his master's degree at Southern Miss in sport management with a certificate in Sport Security. MacDonald played hockey at Iowa State during the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons.
He and his wife, Brooke (Southern Miss '19), reside in Hattiesburg with their dogs, CeCe and Emmy Brock
