Matt Kubik came to Southern Miss in February after working the last four seasons as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at ULM (2016-19).
Last season, Kubik’s offense ranked No. 17 nationally at 460.9 yards per game, with his rushing attack holding a No. 26 ranking (207.3 ypg) and his passing attack 46th (253.7 ypg). Kubik has played an instrumental role in Caleb Evans’ development into one of the nation’s top dual-threat quarterbacks. Evans ranked as one of only three NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision quarterbacks to put together multiple games with at least 290 passing yards and 100 rushing yards in 2018 (vs. Georgia Southern and Troy), joining Oklahoma’s Kyler Murray (3 games) and Miami’s D’Eriq King (2 games). As a junior, he ranked second the Sun Belt in passing yards (239.1 per game) and total offense (297.1 ypg.). Evans was named All-Sun Belt Third Team after completing 231-of-374 throws (.618) for 2,869 yards, 16 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He also led the Warhawks in rushing TDs (10) and finished second on the team in rushing with a career-high 632 rushing yards (140 carries).
ULM ranked among the Sun Belt leaders in total offense (second at 458.2 yards per game), scoring offense (second at 33.9 points per game), passing offense (third at 287.9 ypg.) and rushing offense (fourth at 170.3 ypg.) in 2017. The Warhawks also ranked among the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision leaders in total offense (No. 21), passing offense (No. 24), scoring offense (No. 25) and passing efficiency (No. 29 with a 146.2 rating).
The Warhawks amassed 500 yards total offense or more in five games in 2017, while also producing five 200-yard rushing games, including a season-high 307 yards at South Alabama (41 rushing attempts).
Kubik came to ULM after a two-year stint as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Stephen F. Austin (2014-15). During his tenure in Nacogdoches, Texas, a total of nine offensive players earned All-Southland Conference accolades, including a pair of specialty awards.
In 2015, the Lumberjacks averaged 427.9 yards total offense and 28.7 points per game. SFA put 55 points on the scoreboard twice during the 2015 campaign: against Incarnate Word and Houston Baptist. Following the regular season, offensive guard Byron Williams was named Second-Team All-Southland Conference while quarterback Zach Conque earned all-conference honorable mention.
In his first season in charge of the Lumberjack offense, SFA averaged 32.7 points and 460.8 yards total offense while scoring at least 30 points in eight games in 2014. Under Kubik’s tutelage, Conque earned Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year honors after finishing with 3,359 yards total offense (2,733 passing and 626 rushing) and 29 total touchdowns (15 passing, 13 rushing and 1 receiving). Running back Gus Johnson was named the league’s Player of the Year after rushing for 1,683 yards and 23 TDs.
Kubik previously served as the wide receivers coach at Central Arkansas from 2011-13 where he helped the Bears to back-to-back playoff appearances in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (2011 and 2012).
His first collegiate coaching position came at Northwestern State in Natchitoches, Louisiana, where he worked four seasons, serving as both the wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator from 2009-10 and running backs coach from 2007-08.
He began his coaching career at Catholic High School in Baton Rouge in 2006, working with the wide receivers.
Kubik, a three-year letterman and a two-year starter at quarterback at Louisiana Tech (2002, 2004-05) threw for 4,020 career yards and 28 career touchdowns. He was named the team’s Offensive MVP as a senior after completing 171-of-312 passes for 2,202 yards and 18 TDs. Kubik recorded two career 300-yard passing games: 303 yards at SMU in 2004 and a career-best 329 yards against San Jose State in 2005.
He earned his bachelor’s degree in finance from Louisiana Tech in 2005. Kubik received his master’s degree in public administration from ULM in 2018. He has also been a member of the Manning Passing Academy, the annual quarterback camp hosted by the Manning family.
