John Wozniak

John Wozniak returns for his fourth season in Hattiesburg, acting as special teams coordinator and wide receivers coach.
Wozniak, who joined the Golden Eagles in January 2013 during former coach Todd Monken’s first season, guided the receiving corps into the record books in last fall. Mike Thomas set single-season school records for receiving yards (1,391) and touchdown receptions (14), while Casey Martin collected a school-best 80 receptions in a season.
He helped the Golden Eagle offense establish a school-record for 7,133 total offensive yards including 4,616 passing.
Wozniak’s special teams produced three touchdowns, one on a kickoff return and adding two more off fake field goals.
In 2014, the Golden Eagle receiving corps collected 3,231 receiving yards, including 529 yards and a touchdown from senior Markese Triplett.
Wozniak also oversaw the progress of place kicker Corey Acosta, who earned first-team All-Conference USA honors. Acosta led the team in scoring with 78 points, going 19-of-25 on field goal attempts and 21-of-23 on extra point tries. Acosta was named a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award and was a finalist for the Wuerffel Trophy.
In 2013, Wozniak (inside) and Monken (outside) split coaching duties with the receivers, who accounted for 2,350 yards of the Golden Eagles’ 2,911 receiving yardage and 16 of the team’s 19 receiving touchdowns.
Wide receiver Tyre’oune Holmes was named Conference USA All-Fresh- man in 2013, as well as being named honorable mention All-C-USA. He led Southern Miss with 53 receptions for 410 yards with two touchdowns. He had a receiving touchdown in USM’s final two games, including a 3-yard touchdown reception in the Golden Eagles’ 62-27 victory over UAB.
On special teams, Corey Acosta led the team with 57 points in Wozniak’s first year at Southern Miss. Acosta was perfect on point-after attempts, going 24-for-24. In addition, Acosta added 11 field goals, including making multiple kicks in five games.
Wozniak’s special teams did not allow a blocked punt during the 2013 season, while inducing a pair of touchbacks, 14 fair catches and downing 22 balls inside the 20-yard line. In addition, the special teams notched 10 punts of 50 yards or more on the season. The punt return team averaged 13.4 yards
per return, while the kickoff return team posted a 19.7 average. The kickoff and punt units did not allow a touchdown return all season.
A 1999 graduate of Knox College, Wozniak and Monken not only shared an alma mater, but had been on staff together prior to Southern Miss. Thepair worked together at LSU in 2005, when Monken was the passing game coordinator and Wozniak served as a quality control assistant. The Tigers finished 11-2 and played in the SEC Championship game and the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.
Wozniak came to the Golden Eagles after spending a season on the staff of the 2012 national champion Alabama Crimson Tide. In Tuscaloosa, Wozniak served as an off-the-field administrator and assistant, helping prepare game film and scouting preparations.
Prior to his stint with Alabama, Wozniak was running backs coach and co-special teams coordinator at UAB in 2011.
Wozniak has been on staff of several successful programs since beginning his coaching career in 1999.
In 2010, Wozniak served as offensive coordinator at West Georgia. He has also coached at Memphis (2009), Montana State (2008), Georgia Southern (2006), LSU (2005 and 2007), Oklahoma State (2004) and Knox (Ill.) College (1999-03).
Wozniak was the special teams coordinator at Memphis in 2009 and held similar responsibilities, along with coaching tight ends, at Montana State in 2008. While at Montana State, all three of Wozniak’s position players earned All-Big Sky Conference honors. Tight end Brandon Bostick led the team in
touchdowns and was third in receptions despite playing in just seven games. Punter Erik Fisher ranked 15th nationally averaging 41.8 yards per kick, and place kicker Jason Cunningham was 13-of-19 on field goal attempts. The punt return unit blocked five punts during the season, as the squad was 7-5 overall
and 5-3 in the Big Sky.
Wozniak spent one season at Georgia Southern where he held the position of tight ends and special teams coach. The Eagles led the Southern Conference and ranked 14th nationally in kickoff returns, and they also ranked 29th nationally in punt returns.
He has also been a member of two national championship staffs, having worked at LSU during the 2007 season as a quality control coach with the Tiger receivers and quarterbacks. During that season, LSU finished the season with the No. 11 scoring and rushing offense in the nation.
Wozniak earned degrees in physics and secondary education at Knox College while performing as a standout all-conference quarterback and wide receiver.
He is married to the former Jessica Swaye.
