HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss Athletics announces the retirement of three long-time staff members as the 2025-26 year comes to a close.
The three include Jane Massengale, Assistant Athletic Director for Business Operations, Todd McCall, Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine, and Sonya Varnell, Senior Associate Athletic Director for Olympic Sports/Senior Women Administrator.
Massengale, a native of Hattiesburg, Miss., joined the Southern Miss staff in 1990 and has been responsible for the department's financial reporting and record keeping during her tenure with Athletics. She is a three-time Southern Miss graduate, including an MBA. Massengale completes her Golden Eagle tenure on June 30.
McCall was a fixture on the Golden Eagle practice and playing fields for the last 24 years, who stepped away from his role at Southern Miss back in February to accept a new challenge in his professional career. McCall transitioned into the head athletic trainer for the Houston Gamblers of the United Football League, whose season ran from late March through May.
Varnell joined the Southern Miss Athletics department in 1999 as the Senior Woman Administrator and served as a Senior Associate Athletic Director since 2005. In her role, Varnell provided oversight of nine of the department's 17 intercollegiate sport programs. She also directed and monitored the department's gender and minority equity plans. Varnell, a 1991 and 1989 graduate of Ole Miss, spent two years as the graduate assistant track and field coach for the Rebels after serving as a four-year letterwinner in the sport.
