How it Happened
For the third time this season, Curt Lewis scored the first points of the game for Southern Miss as he drilled a corner three right in front of the ULM bench. The Golden Eagles got an early spark from Djahi Binet as well, who scored six points by the first media timeout – Lewis also had six at that point.
After leading 17-10 at the first media timeout, Southern Miss pushed its lead to 28-13 as it had made seven of its last nine shots. Israel Hart drilled a three-pointer and Tegra Izay followed with a layup to push the lead 16, Southern Miss' largest of the half.
ULM went on two 7-0 runs in a four-minute span to slash into the Golden Eagle lead and made it 36-31 with 3:40 to play. Binet answered to put himself into double figures for the fifth time this season, but Dylan Diaz hit a three to put it right back to a four-point game.
Dylan Brumfield gave Southern Miss some much-needed momentum right before the half as he took an inbounds pass with 6.1 seconds left and went end-to-end. His basket not only went in, but he also drew a foul and converted the and-one to make it 45-38 at the half.
After scoring its most points against a Division I team in the first half this season, Southern Miss kept the offensive fire going in the second half. Although it started with a stretch of five turnovers in the first five minutes of the half, the Golden Eagles quickly got back on track as Hart stole an inbounds pass for a contested layup to extend the lead to nine.
Tylik Weeks then put the lead into double-digits after he stole the ball and went down for a fast-break slam – it was his seventh slam of the season. He followed that with a tough and-one to put Southern Miss' lead back to 11 after ULM cut into it.
The Golden Eagles finally blew the game open with a quick stretch that included a Chiante' Tramble three, Weeks block, and a Lewis three. That put Southern Miss ahead by 15 with 11:18 left to play. Tegra Izay pushed it to 17 with a dunk of his own and then a 9-0 run moved it to a 22-point lead. Overall, it was a 19-2 run over a five-minute stretch that led to an 81-55 lead. ULM ended the game on a 15-6 run as Southern Miss turned the ball over a couple times down the stretch. Weeks scored the final six points of the game to seal the road win for the Golden Eagles.
