HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss returns home for the second of three consecutive home games to begin the 2025 season when they entertain nationally ranked Jackson State Saturday afternoon at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at M.M. Roberts Stadium.
Game time is set for 4 p.m., and can be seen via ESPN+ as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network.
The season started for the Golden Eagles last weekend by dropping a contest to in-state foe Mississippi State, 34-17, while the Tigers began their slate with a 28-14 home victory over Hampton.
The Tigers enter this game ranked No. 14 in the American Football Coaches Association FCS poll and have won their last 11 contests, which is the longest current streak in Division I football.
This game marks the fourth meeting between the two teams dating back to the 1987 season. The Golden Eagles won the initial meeting 17-7 in front of a then school-record crowd of 33,687 on Halloween day and then followed up with a pair of 55-7 wins in both the 2002 and 2018 seasons.
In his debut for the Golden Eagles, quarterback Braylon Braxton threw for 199 yards and rushed for a team-high 58 yards. Braxton converted passes to 11 different receivers in the opener, which marked the first time the offense had done that since Sept. 9, 2017, against Southern.
Running back Jeffery Pittman added 67 all-purpose yards, which included 16 rushing yards and 51 receiving yards.
On the defensive side, sophomore linebacker Chris Jones led the way on defense with a career-high 13 tackles. Josh Moten added 10 in the contest.
Following the JSU contest, the Golden Eagles complete the three-game home stretch with its Sun Belt opener versus App State next Saturday, Sept. 13. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
Tickets are still available for all six remaining Southern Miss home football games and can be purchased by going online at SouthernMiss.com/Tickets.
