HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss quarterback Braylon Braxton (Frisco, Texas) was named to the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List on Thursday. The award annually recognizes college football players across the country who exemplify community service, academic excellence and athletic achievement.Â
Widely regarded as college football's premier award for community service, the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy celebrates student-athletes who use their platforms to serve others and create positive change. Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winner and University of Florida quarterback Danny Wuerffel, who turned his football success into a lifelong mission of service, the award reflects his legacy of leadership and humanitarianism. This year marks the 21st anniversary of the trophy's founding.
Braxton, who transferred from Marshall this past offseason was recently named the Sun Belt Conference's preseason Offensive Player of the Year. He was voted the 2024 Sun Belt Conference Newcomer of the Year after playing 11 games and started in eight for Marshall, helping lead the Thundering Herd to the 2024 SBC championship. His play in the SBC title game earned him Most Valuable Player honors.
He went 8-0 as a starter as he threw for 1,624 yards on 124-of-206 throws with 19 touchdowns and only two interceptions as he averaged 147.6 yards per game passing. Also ranked second on the team in rushing with 610 yards on 134 carries with four touchdown runs and averaged 55.5 rushing yards per contest. He ranked top 40 nationally following the league championship at No. 16 in passing efficiency (154.9), No. 25 in yards per completion (13.1) and No. 39 in passing touchdowns.
The 2025 Allstate Wuerffel Trophy finalists and recipient will be selected by a national voting committee, with input from a fan vote. The 2025 recipient will also serve as Captain of the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team and will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards show on December 12th, airing on ESPN. The Allstate Wuerffel Trophy Presentation Gala will follow on January 31, 2026, at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.
