LAFAYETTE, La.-Southern Miss Softball (23-26, 10-11 Sun Belt) dropped Thursday's series opener at Louisiana (26-24, 12-10 Sun Belt) 2-0, as the Ragin' Cajuns' freshman pitcher Mallory Wheeler tossed her first career no-hitter.
Wheeler held the Golden Eagles hitless, tallying two strikeouts and only issuing a walk on the way to her 11th win of the season.
Lee was the only Golden Eagle batter to reach base in the game, drawing a leadoff walk in the second inning. Lee has drawn 16 walks in league play, which ranks as the third most in the Sun Belt.
Wheeler dueled with Southern Miss freshman Kayla Giardina, who threw the entirety of the game. Giardina threw 77 pitches and allowed eight hits, one walk and one earned run.
After four scoreless innings, Louisiana broke through in the fifth inning with four straight hits. The Ragin' Cajuns scored their first run after a single and then a throwing error allowed a runner to advance home. Emily Smith followed with an RBI single to make it 2-0.
One of the nation's leading on-base streaks was snapped in the loss, as freshman Hannah Christian's streak ended at 21 straight games safely reaching base. Her five-game hitting streak was also snapped, following her record-setting 15-game hitting streak earlier this season.
