HATTIESBURG, Miss.-Southern Miss Softball (21-24, 8-9 Sun Belt) returns home for its final series at the Southern Miss Softball Complex this weekend, hosting App State (20-23, 10-8 Sun Belt), beginning Friday at 6 p.m.
The program will celebrate Senior Weekend, honoring 12 seniors across the three-game series: Sam Bodell, Carlee Durham, Mikaila Fox, Marissa Frederick, Claire Ginder, Faith Kivett, Jana Lee, Maddie Moody, Loganne Stepp, Natalie Taylor, Ryanna Valdivia and Maddie Weeks.Â
The Golden Eagles look to close out their home slate on a positive note. Southern Miss has achieved a 14-9 record at the Southern Miss Softball Complex, extending their home winning record streak to four seasons, which was last done from 2003-2006.
The Golden Eagles recently snapped a six-game skid with a 2-0 shutout over James Madison on Saturday, led by freshman Kayla Giardina's first career complete-game shutout. Giardina allowed just two hits and threw only 52 pitches to earn her sixth win of the year.
At the plate, Jana Lee led the way with her ninth multi-hit performance of the season. She put Southern Miss ahead early by launching a solo home run on the second pitch of the second inning for her career-high seventh homer of the year.
Now, Southern Miss turns to face an App State team coming off of a series sweep at Georgia State last weekend. The Mountaineers stand at sixth place in the Sun Belt with a 10-8 record, having won series against the Panthers, James Madison and Marshall this season.
