HARRISONBURG, Va.-Southern Miss Softball (21-24, 8-9 Sun Belt) closed its series at James Madison (21-22, 8-11 Sun Belt) on a high note, shutting out the Dukes in a 2-0 victory Saturday morning.
ÂFreshman pitcher Kayla Giardina delivered her first career complete-game shutout, allowing just two hits and throwing only 52 pitches to earn her sixth win of the season. Giardina's dominant outing helped the Golden Eagles snap a six-game skid and secured the team's third shutout victory of the year.
ÂAt the plate, Jana Lee led the way with her ninth multi-hit performance of the season. She put Southern Miss ahead early by launching a solo home run on the second pitch of the second inning for her career-high seventh homer of the year.
ÂParis Ferguson added to the lead in the fourth, bringing home Maddie Weeks with an RBI single. Weeks had reached base with a single and stolen second to set up the scoring opportunity.
ÂHannah Christian and Kayce Bennett each tallied a hit and a walk, while Shelby Allen also drew a walk to help fuel the Golden Eagles' offense.Â
ÂDefensively, Southern Miss played a clean, error-free game, retiring the Dukes in order in five innings, including the final three. Senior first baseman Ryanna Valdivia anchored the defense with a team-high 11 putouts.
