HARRISONBURG, Va.-Southern Miss Softball (20-24, 7-9 Sun Belt) came up short in a 7-5 loss to James Madison (21-21, 7-10 Sun Belt) Friday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles racked up nine hits, highlighted by their third multi-home run game of the season. Ryanna Valdivia and Hannah Christian each homered, driving in four of the team's five runs. Freshman Carrie Green paced the offense with two hits for her eighth multi-hit game of the year.
Despite a strong day at the plate, Southern Miss was hampered by five defensive errors in a tightly contested matchup. Starter Natalie Herrington held the Dukes hitless through three innings, but JMU capitalized on miscues in the fourth, plating five unearned runs to swing the momentum.
Southern Miss started Friday's game with the first lead again after Valdivia launched her fourth home run of the season on a two-run shot to score Green, who reached base after her first single.
James Madison answered in the bottom of the fourth, using two Southern Miss errors to place runners on base. A fielder's choice and an RBI single by Lily Romero tied the game before Payton List delivered a three-run homer to give the Dukes a 5-2 advantage.
The Golden Eagles quickly responded in the fifth. After a leadoff single by Shelby Allen, Christian launched her first career home run, cutting the deficit to one. Paris Ferguson then tied the game with an RBI double, her second of the season.
James Madison retook the lead in the bottom of the frame, as Romero drove in two runs with a single after Jana Lee entered the circle in relief of BrookLynn White.
While Ferguson drew a walk in the top of the seventh, the Dukes sealed their victory with a groundout to List. James Madison has now won 10 of its 11 last games.
White took the loss for Southern Miss, while List earned her ninth win of the season for the Dukes.
