HATTIESBURG, Miss.-Southern Miss Softball (20-22, 7-7 Sun Belt) came up short in a 2-0 pitchers' duel against Texas State (28-12, 11-4 Sun Belt) on Sunday afternoon at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
Freshman Kayla Giardina delivered a strong performance in the circle, allowing just two earned runs across six innings while striking out two. Jana Lee came in relief to record the final two outs of the game, escaping a jam in the seventh. The Golden Eagles battled Texas State's starter Madison Azua, who tossed a complete-game shutout with seven strikeouts to earn her 17th win of the season.
Hannah Christian, Maddie Weeks, Mikaila Fox and Claire Ginder each recorded hits for the Golden Eagles, with Ginder collecting her third double of the season. With a leadoff single in the sixth, Christian extended her hitting streak to 15 games, the team's longest streak this season.
Texas State got on the board in the first after loading the bases with one out. Ciara Trahan brought in the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly. While the Giardina and the Golden Eagles defense held the Bobcats scoreless for the next five innings, Erin Peterson added insurance with an RBI single to extend Texas State's lead to 2-0. Azua closed out the bottom half of the frame, striking the side out in order.
