HATTIESBURG, Miss.-Southern Miss Softball (20-21, 7-6 Sun Belt) was held scoreless in a 5-0 loss to Texas State (27-12, 10-4 Sun Belt) Saturday evening at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
The Golden Eagles trailed closely throughout the match, as Texas State's Analisa Soliz and Madison Azua combined to limit Southern Miss to three hits and clinch the series win, snapping the Golden Eagles' streak of three straight conference series victories, their longest since 2016.
The Bobcats added three insurance runs in the seventh after holding a 2-0 lead through the second. Southern Miss threatened in the fifth by loading the bases, but Azua worked out of the jam with a key strikeout as she worked in the circle for the remainder of the game en route to her second save of the season.Â
Natalie Herrington took the loss after allowing two runs on four hits over two innings. Kayla Giardina tossed five innings in relief.
Southern Miss' performance was highlighted by freshman Hannah Christian's continued success at the plate. The leadoff hitter logged her 12th multi-hit game of the season and extended her hitting streak to 14 games, the team's longest streak this season.
Carrie Green produced the team's other hit on her third career triple, rounding to third on a shot sent out to left center in the bottom of the fifth.
Before the game, Southern Miss honored members of the 2000 Women's College World Series team as part of Alumni Weekend. Lisa Guillory, Tammy Hawkins, Melanie McMains-Price, Kenya Peters, Chrystal Stevens-Hailey, Kendra Seals and Marty Windham were recognized for the 25th anniversary of the team's historic run.
