HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss football team enjoyed its second day of spring practice in shorts and helmets Wednesday afternoon under sunny skies at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility.
With temperatures hovering in the upper 70s, first-year coach Charles Huff continued to prepare his team for the 2025 season, which includes seven home games.
Through the first two practices, Huff shared his thoughts on the team's early workouts in spring drills.
"Obviously, it is about where you would think it would be," said Huff of the process of getting the team ready for next fall. "There was a lot of energy and excitement on day one, and then you got back and look to see that there was a bunch of MA's (missed assignments) on basic stuff and you review it.
"(Practice) two was much cleaner and the energy was the same (as practice one), which was good. It was much cleaner from an execution standpoint. We are challenging the guys a little bit, from a conditioning tempo piece in practice but also from a football knowledge standpoint. It's not just run around and hit people anymore."
Huff went on to talk about how the team has handled things early in his tenure.
"I am impressed with their commitment in wanting to be good and wanting to improve," said Huff. "They don't necessarily know how to do that yet, but that is our job as coaches to teach them. It is a long way to go, but we are maximizing all 15 days this spring."
The season opener is slated for Saturday, Aug. 30, against Mississippi State.
