HATTIESBURG, Miss.-Southern Miss Softball (14-15, 1-2 Sun Belt) jumped out to an early lead Wednesday night, powering past Nicholls (10-17, 3-3 Southland) with a 10-4 win at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
The Golden Eagles' offense exploded for their first multi-home run game of the season, with seniors Jana Lee and Mikaila Fox both launching two-run shots in the third inning. Southern Miss scored double-digit runs for the fourth time this season, all of which have been games at home.
Lee also worked five innings in the circle for the Golden Eagles, earning her sixth win of the season. The senior pitcher and designated player gave up three earned runs while striking out three batters. At the plate, she went two for four, bringing in two runs on two hits with two RBI.
Kayla Giardina closed out the game with two scoreless innings, striking out three of the six batters she faced and retiring the Colonels in order to seal the win.
The Colonels and Golden Eagles exchanged blows in the first, each bringing a runner home from a sacrifice fly, with Ryanna Valdivia bringing home Hannah Christian in the bottom half.
Nicholls threatened in the second inning, loading the bases and scoring on an RBI single from Claire Sisco, who led the Colonels with three hits in the game. However, freshman left fielder Carrie Green prevented any further damage in the frame, making a sliding play to a fly ball for the final out.
Southern Miss scored two runs in the second, plating the first one on an RBI fielder's choice. As Christian safely stole her team-leading tenth base of the season, Natalie Taylor ran home on a Nicholls throwing error for a 3-1 lead.
After a clean defensive inning, the Golden Eagles' offense surged in the third. Fox took the first pitch of her at-bat out to the deck over the left field wall for her third home run of the season. Following a single and stolen base from catcher Kayce Bennett, Lee extended the lead to 7-1 with a two-run blast of her own.
The Colonels cut into the deficit two runs in the fourth, but the Golden Eagles added insurance in the fifth as Weeks reached scoring position on a double and scored on Bennett's RBI single.
Giardina inherited two runners in the top of the sixth, but tallied three quick outs after a sacrifice bunt and then striking out two Colonels to leave two stranded. Southern Miss added another run, as Christian scored on a fielder's choice and Bennett brought Weeks home on a sacrifice fly to cap the scoring.

- Lee's three strikeouts bring her within one of 200 career strikeouts. She has matched her season total of 43 strikeouts from last year in just 15 appearances.
- Fox recorded a career-high three RBI against the Colonels.
- Weeks surpassed 25 hits this season and logged her seventh multi-hit game of the year.
- Southern Miss enters its first home conference series of this season boasting a 10-3 record at home, already matching last season's home win total. The Golden Eagles finished the 2024 home slate with a 10-6 record, marking the third consecutive season that the team recorded a .500 or better standing at home, the longest streak for the program since 2008-2010. The Golden Eagles look to extend that streak to four seasons, which was last done from 2003-2006.
