Men's Basketball Falls at Arkansas State

JONESBORO, Ark. – Arkansas State (19-7, 10-3 Sun Belt) picked up a 101-67 win over Southern Miss (10-16, 5-8 Sun Belt) at First National Bank Arena on Wednesday night.
Andre Curbelo and Neftali Alvarez combined for 31 points as Curbelo led the Golden Eagles in scoring with 16 points. The two Puerto Ricans each finished with six made field goals and one three-pointer.
Cobie Montgomery extended his made three-pointer streak to 22 games after he drained a pair tonight. Denijay Harris poured in 11 points as he finished in double figures for the 22nd time this season.
Alvarez led Southern Miss in rebounds with five as the Golden Eagles finished with 31 team boards. Arkansas State finished with 44 rebounds – 15 of those were offensive rebounds.
Southern Miss travels to ULM on Saturday to play its final road game of the regular season. The Golden Eagles will tip-off against the Warhawks at 2 p.m. inside Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
How it Happened
Despite Southern Miss scoring the first points of the game, not much went its way in the first half. The Golden Eagles fell victim to a 21-7 run that put Arkansas State ahead 21-7.
Andre Curbelo started to chip away at the deficit as he scored 14 points in the half, but the Red Wolves strung together a series of runs to pull ahead by as many as 25. Arkansas State hit nine three-pointers on 23 attempts in the opening half, while Southern Miss went 3-for-6 from deep.
Neftali Alvarez and Curbelo combined for 24 points in the half, while Christian Watson and Denijay Harris each had five. The Golden Eagles shot 60.9 percent from the floor in the half but turned the ball over 13 times. Arkansas State shot the ball at a 47.5 percent clip as nearly half their field goals game from deep.
Arkansas State extended its lead in the second half as it pushed the advantage to 37 points late in the game. The Red Wolves had 11 players score in the second half, while Kobie Julien finished with a game-high 20 points. Southern Miss had 11 players score in the game as Trey Alfonso led the late bench charge with three points.
