Nine Football Players Earn All-Sun Belt Conference Honors

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss featured nine football players earning All-Sun Belt Conference honors in a release Thursday morning by the league office.
The Golden Eagles, which finished 7-5 during the regular season and 5-3 in SBC play, registered three players on the first team, including defensive lineman J'Mond Tapp (Donaldsonville, La.), linebacker Chris Jones (Bryam, Miss.) and defensive back Josh Moten (Waldorf, Md.). Southern Miss also linebacker Michael Montgomery (Seattle, Wash.) and defensive back Ian Foster (Brundidge, Ala.) as third-team selections.
The honorable mention picks were quarterback Braylon Braxton (Frisco, Texas), wide receivers Elijah Metcalf (Charlotte, N.C.) and Micah Davis (Atlanta, Ga.), along with defensive lineman Brodarius Lewis (Prattville, Ala.).
Tapp led the Golden Eagle defensive line with 67 tackles (18 solos) with team bests of 11.5 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks. His sack total ranked second in the SBC and No. 28 nationally, while his tackle per game total ranked No.1 among defensive linemen in the league.
The league's leading tackler, Jones, ranked seventh nationally in total tackles, averaging 10.7 per contest. Jones was the first Golden Eagle to record 100-plus tackles in a season since D'Nerius Antoine in 2015 and produced the most since Gerald McRath registered 137 in 2008.
Moten tied for the SBC lead in interceptions with five, which also ranks No. 3 nationally. His interception per game total was No. 6 in the FBS. Three of his interceptions came at Arkansas State, where the Golden Eagles captured a road victory and earned him Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week honors. He ended the regular season with 56 tackles (35 solo) with 10 pass breakups.
As for Montgomery, he was second on the team in tackles, as well as No. 3 in the Sun Belt and No. 16 nationally in tackles at 9.2 per contest. His tackle total also included 3.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. He picked off two passes and forced a fumble, while also adding two pass breakups.
Foster recorded 71 tackles (27 solo) to go along with 3.5 tackles for loss, a sack, three interceptions – two returned for touchdowns – seven pass breakups, two QB hurries and a fumble recovery. He returned one interception 99 yards for a score against App State and another 49 yards against Jacksonville State. Foster was named SBC Defensive Player of the Week once during the year.
As for honorable mention picks, Braxton threw for 2,796 yards on 230-of-353 attempts (65.2%) with 23 touchdown passes and only seven interceptions. He tossed at least one touchdown pass in all 11 games that he played, and his TD pass total was the most by a Golden Eagle QB since Nick Mullens threw 24 during the 2016 season. He opened the season by throwing multi-TD passes in six consecutive games, tying a school record (Mullens, 2015). Braxton led the Sun Belt in TD passes and ranked No. 2 in the league in passing yards per game (254.18), along with being No. 4 in total offense (27.182) and passing efficiency (149.22).
Davis posted 28 catches for 393 yards and five touchdown receptions. He owns the longest catch in school history – 98 yards – with a touchdown at Louisiana and collected a 100-yard receiving contest in that game with 134 yards. In addition, Davis returned 12 punts for 241 yards, including a long of 31 and added three punt returns for 42 yards and a long of 33 yards. His combined kick return yards of 283 ranks No. 69 nationally.
Another wide receiver, Metcalf, ranked first on the team in both catches (52) and receiving yards (677). He had back-to-back 100-yard receiving games against Arkansas State (143) and Texas State (116), while also garnering a touchdown catch in both contests. Metcalf caught at least two passes in 11 games during the year, including a season-best 10 versus Texas State and averaged 6.8 catches a contest over the last five games.
Lewis tallied 53 tackles (15 solos), which also entailed two tackles for loss, four pass breakups and four quarterback hurries. He notched at least two tackles in 11 games during the year, including a season-high 11 at South Alabama. Lewis finished second on the Golden Eagles defensive line in tackles.
The Golden Eagles will complete their 2025 season when they play in a to-be-determined bowl game later this month.
