Taveras and Weeks Lead Attempted Comeback at Grambling State

GRAMBLING, La. – Southern Miss (1-3, 0-0 Sun Belt) dropped a 75-70 non-conference game at Grambling State (3-1, 0-0 SWAC) on Thursday night.
The duo of Tylik Weeks and Isaac Taveras each went for 19 points at Frederick B. Hobdy Assembly Center, while Taveras led the Golden Eagles with nine boards. Weeks added eight rebounds and five steals.
Southern Miss never managed a lead larger than three points, which came early in the first half. The Tigers worked their way to a 12-point lead at the half thanks to a 56 percent shooting clip and a 44 percent mark from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles went 0-for-8 from deep and shot 31.6 percent from the floor.
Weeks came out of the half with a 5-0 run of his own that momentarily flipped the momentum towards the Golden Eagle bench. Grambling, though, answered Weeks' punch and every other Southern Miss punch until Taveras turned it into a three-point game with 10:22 to play.
He then cut it to two a couple of minutes later, right before the under-eight media timeout. That's when Jamil Muttilib drained three three-pointers to counter the Golden Eagle run. Muttilib ended the game 5-for-8 from deep as the Tigers held off Southern Miss with a hot hand at the end.
On the defensive end, Southern Miss registered a season-high 15 steals, which is tied for the second-most by a Jay Ladner Golden Eagle team. Curt Lewis added eight points as he picked up his second consecutive start and played 31 minutes.
Both Chiante' Tramble and EJ Paymon went for five points, while Paymon's mark was a career best. Eleven Golden Eagles grabbed at least one rebound as Southern Miss outrebounded its opponent for the third-straight game.
