HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss cornerback Josh Moten collected three of his team's five interceptions last Saturday as the Golden Eagles won at Arkansas State 27-21, earning him Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors in an announcement this afternoon.
Southern Miss, which ranks first nationally in both interceptions (20) and turnover margin (1.78), registered six total takeaways against the Red Wolves to hold on to first place in the Sun Belt Conference West race.
Moten added six tackles (four solo) and a pass break up and his three interceptions were the most for a Golden Eagle since Etric Pruitt tallied that many against Army in 2002. His first two picks came in the second quarter, coming on A-State drives that were in Southern Miss territory. He collected the first pick at the USM 3 and had no return. His second pick was taken at the USM 12 and returned 22 yards. His final pick came in the third quarter, and he registered it in the Golden Eagle end zone to thwart another A-State potential scoring drive.
His lone pass breakup came on the Red Wolves final drive of the contest as they drove down to take the lead in which they threw an interception on the final play.
Moten helped the Golden Eagles win their fifth-straight contest, which is the most wins in a row since the 2015 season. They return home this week to face Texas State in a 2:30 p.m., contest at The Rock. Tickets can be purchased by going online at SouthernMiss.com/Tickets.
This is the first SBC weekly award for Moten this season and the second Golden Eagle defender to win the award this season. Southern Miss has garnered three SBC Weekly awards this season.
